The Marathon Continues / by Chris.Dot

Wowoahweewah beautiful people,

thanks again for tuning in and out to another issue of Love Letters on the Walls. A long couple months with short days, this will be the first issue since March. And even though i’ve been M.I.A with the journalism, I’ve been reading and writing my ass off. So, with that being said, let’s get to it!

Truuuue

With American Bane in full production, moving into the illustration phase, I’ve set our sails on yet another adventure. This time, in the land of martial arts and kick assery when Trudence Smith joins a kung fu tournament as a means to save her father’s restaurant from foreclosure. A self proclaimed martial arts enthusiast and master of kung fu, Trudence will kick and punch her way through a miniseries of killers and crooks at Hoorahs Casino, the new place to be in town!

Like most writers/creators, I tend to imitate life in my art, from inspirations to anecdotal stories and this will be no different as I pay homage to my love of martial arts movies. Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Jet Li, I grew up watching the greats along with those such as Michael Jai White and Cynthia Rothrock and this is my love story to those films. Be on the look out for Tru Kung Fu, coming 2026!

Alot to read about

I’ve had quite a bit of time to do some reading in between working full time and working on books. From Black Panther’s A Nation Under Our Feet to Image’s Bitter Root, both of which I will be speaking more on in further newsletters, I have been reading some really dope, original comics and as well as some classics.

Mark Spear’s Monsters

Artwork by Mark Spears

Bursting on the scene with this vibrant and pastel looking comic back in September of 2024, Mark Spears’ Monster series has quickly put Keenspot Comics at the top of the indie comics list, and for good reason. Barely getting my hands on a physical copy of issue 1, this book’s art will have you hooked from page one as Mark tells this dark story of monsters hunting monsters when Dracula looms over the night once again after being buried alive for centuries by Van Helsing. With seven issues out to date and following classic monster lore we all grew up knowing and love: from The Wolfman to Jekyll and Hyde, Mark Spears’ Monsters is a refreshing take on antiquated tales.

DC’s Power Company: Recharged

A team up of black super heroes from the DC universe, along with a black Batman, The Power company is recharged in this recent run when someone is terrorizing and killing people in the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. After Amanda Waller hatches a plan to destroy Darkseid in earlier, All In events, the universe is sent in chaos and a new power is looking to overthrow Waller and his name is Josiah Power. Armed with Black Lightening and Vixen at his side, Power forms a new suicide squad with hopes to clean up the streets while moving up in the political ranks in this action packed, black powered series. Personally, I feel this story could’ve worked just as well with the original Batman, as it felt like he was race swapped for the sake of an all black team, to which, Mr. Terrific! All in all the story is interesting and definitely worth checking out.

Dark Horse's FML

Mom life can be a bit hectic, especially when your teenage son mistakenly turns himself into an ancient creature from your past. Ex rockstar and full time mom, Patty is only trying her best to be a mom while getting her creative angst out, but when her sone Riley discovers and performs a ritual from one of her old books, she is forced to help find his way back into his body, while still getting him and his friends safely to the school’s halloween party. An exciting rush of a story, this comic is packed with some cool imagery as well as a story to keep you turning page after page. Though there are some times where it’s hard to determine who’s ‘voice in the head’ we are listening to as both the mom and her son share anxious memories, sometimes within the same panels. But, overall it’s still a fun, gory book for young adults to dive into.
